Co-occurring Substance Use and Emotional Distress Concerns

Intermountain recognizes that emotional distress and substance use impact each other.  The program blends mental health and substance abuse services to help youth and their families cope with the combined effects of both disorders.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic

The Intermountain Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic provides Psychiatric assessment and psychotropic medication management for community children. The clinic is part of Intermountain’s Array of Services designed to meet the needs of children and families dealing with a range of mental health issues.

When used appropriately, medications are extremely effective in treating a child’s symptoms to the degree that he or she can do the therapeutic work necessary to achieve and maintain wellness. Intermountain uses a conservative approach in medication management, believing strongly that medications are not “magic pills” that fix a child’s life. The clinic adheres to a team approach to wellness and incorporates the expertise and support of multiple community service providers to achieve optimal outcomes for each youth and family.

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapists evaluate each child’s skills for playing, school performance and daily activities and compare them with what is developmentally appropriate for that age group.  We may work with your child on fine motor skills so he or she can grasp and release toys and develop good handwriting skills, address hand-eye coordination to improve play and school skills, help a child with behavioral disorders maintain positive behaviors (e.g., instead of hitting others or acting out, using positive ways to deal with anger), or work with on sensory and attentional issues to improve focus and social skills.

Psychological Services

Sometimes a child’s behavior and interactions can be very confusing and distressing–to the child as well as family and friends around them. Psychological assessment can help you understand what might be troubling your child and how best to intervene in a way that will help him or her heal, make social connections and positive choices. Psychological assessment involves interviews and tests with the aim to understand the cognitive, emotional, and social world of the child. That understanding assists us in making informed recommendations about which services would be most helpful to the child and family.

Neuropsychological evaluations is the comprehensive examination of cognitive, behavior and social emotional functioning. It typically includes standard tests and procedures, which are comprised of paper and pencil and/or computer tests. Examiners also observe the child to gain a better understanding of his/her behaviors and personality. Examiners work directly with the child, interview teachers, doctors and other professionals, and collect a detailed developmental history through an intake interview.

If you think you or your child would benefit from greater understanding that psychological assessment can offer, please contact Intermountain to learn more.

Therapeutic Foster Care & Adoption Services

There are children waiting for a place to call home! Intermountain recognizes the crucial role caring adoptive families play in helping children grow into healthy adults. Our comprehensive pre-service training and on-going integrated mental health services provide relationship solutions that will help to build a strong, permanent family.

Intermountain is a licensed child placing and adoption agency. Our hope is to secure relational and emotional health and a loving, permanent family for each child. We recruit, license, train, and mentor families for therapeutic foster care and adoption. The children placed into families are between the ages of 3 and 18. Once you receive your Therapeutic Foster Care license, Intermountain carefully assesses each child referred to find the right child match for your family. Our dedicated staff then begin providing weekly in-home support to help you build a secure and trusting relationship with your child. Intermountain also works closely with Montana’s Child and Family Services Division to help finalize your child’s adoption.

Please consider the role you can have in the lives of Montana’s most vulnerable children. Not everyone can be a foster or adoptive parent, but everyone can do something to help. Please contact Intermountain to find out more about how you can support foster families as a respite provider or to begin licensure for foster care and adoption.
